Magic Flight Launch Box vs Solo Vaporizer: Vape SHOWDOWN

Portable Vaporizers are more variable than you'd think. There are all kinds of different mechanisms and styles to fit lots of different needs. The Magic Flight Launch Box, for example, is a tiny, basic unit, but it's amazingly discreet and portable. The Solo Vape is a premium portable, but it's got a different set of priorities and different strengths. Here's a comparison of the two, to see what you get for the extra money you would spend on getting an Arizer Solo as compared to the MFLB. By the end you should know which unit is going to fit your lifestyle better.

Comparison Review of Magic Flight Launch Box vs Arizer Solo

Magic Flight Launch Box vs Solo Vaporizer

Vapor Quality

Magic Flight Launch Box

The Magic Flight is so simple and basic that you wouldn't expect it to produce good vapor quality. If you go in with low standards like that, it's definitely going to surprise you. For something this simple, the vapor tastes pretty average and comes at a good consistency. The good thing about the MFLB is that you can get better and better vapor the more experience you get with using the unit. It doesn’t have an inbuilt temperature control mechanism, so you will have to do that yourself by measuring the speed of your drawing from the mouthpiece and the length of time you push the battery in. It's even kind of adjustable, but of course this unit is limited by how basic it is.

Arizer Solo

It's just unfair to compare the Solo to any other portable. This unit is made in Canada and therefore calibrated for best vapor quality. That is the reason many refer to it as the volcano of portables. The vapor quality you get out of this unit would be spectacular in a stationary unit. Usually this is the area where manufacturers make some compromises when designing portables, but not for the Solo. The advanced heating chamber, managed airflow, combination of conduction and convection, and glass parts make this one of the best vapor producers on the market.

Arizer Solo

Winner: Arizer Solo, hands down.

Manufacturing Quality

Magic Flight Launch Box

Magic Flight gives the Launch Box a lifetime warranty, and in my experience this thing just does not break. That's the good part of simple units - there's nothing much to go wrong. The casing is solid wood, and most of the Magic Flight is durable and straight forward. The screen can be a bit delicate, and unfortunately it's not replaceable, but otherwise this unit holds up pretty well. Over time, we have heard of instances where the screen rips.

Arizer Solo

The Solo Vaporizer, like all Arizer products, has excellent manufacturing quality. It's got a two year warranty on parts and labour, and a solid sandblasted aluminum casing to protect everything. The heating chamber is made of stainless steel; ceramic and some “secret compound” that insulates heat remarkably well to prolong battery life. It's extremely durable and won't let you down.
Winner:  While the MFLB is relatively reliable, the batteries have a very short life. The unit itself is manufactured with above average quality, but against a unit like the Arizer Solo the MFLB stands no chance. The Solo is assembled in Canada and is one of the top units in manufacturing quality.

Temperature Flexibility

Magic Flight Launch Box

Launch Box The Magic Flight works by pressing a battery to complete a circuit and heat up the element. This means that the heat depends on how long you hold the battery in place and how fast you draw the vapor. You have a little control over the heat this way, but no real certainty. Basically you should think of the Launch Box as having one setting only, heat or no heat. If you hold it in too long, it might even burn your botanicals. So that is the reason why the crowd that loves Magic Flight are very much in sync with how to use the unit.

Arizer Solo

The Solo has seven temperature settings, ranging from very low for potpourri to several settings in the right range for vaporizing. Level three is 190 Celsius and level 7 is 210 Celsius. This gives you a wide range of possibilities. The temperatures are the optimal vaporization temperatures. For some it might be more desirable to vaporize at even higher temperatures to get even thicker vapor, but that is only a fraction of the people. Usually people prefer vapor around 200 degrees Celsius, which the Solo has covered.

Winner: Arizer Solo - Magic Flight only has one setting

Portability

Magic Flight Launch Box

The Magic Flight Launch Box is designed for portability. It's small enough to hold in your hand or fit in any pocket and only weighs 60 gram. You can keep your botanicals stored in the heating chamber while you carry it around, so you don't need anything but the unit, the battery, and a drawing stem. Portability is one of the best selling points for this vaporizer.

Arizer Solo

The Solo is very portable itself; since the unit is small and slim, but the glass drawing stems are an issue here. They add to the amazing vapor quality of the unit, but they're not the most portable of things. The glass is hard and relatively difficult to break, but it might be more of a concern once you want to put it in your pocket with your keys and cellphone. There are some awesome cases for this unit, but on its own the Solo isn't the most portable, portable vaporizer around.
Solo Vaporizer

Winner: MFLB - Tiny and light. Compared to the size of the Solo, the Launch Box is just simply more portable.

Discreetness

Magic Flight Launch Box

The Magic Flight is so small that most people can hide it in their fist. When you add in the battery and drawing stem, it's a little less discreet, but the whole thing is still just plain tiny. You can also just draw directly from the unit, making it even more discreet. Only draw directly from the unit if you really have to since the vapor taste deteriorates even further without the glass drawing stem. The only issue the Launch Box has is that the wooden body of the unit gathers odor quite quickly and cleaning it is just not possible.  The wood grabs on to odor like a sponge. It is not going to be noticeable on distances more than 30 cm, but still would leave a signature odor in your pocket if you were to carry it around in your pocket.

Arizer Solo

Buy Arizer Solo VaporizerThe Solo looks like any electronic device and is small enough to fit in a bag. You can turn off the sound for silent operation (turn off button sound by holding up button), and it won't draw attention for its looks either. However, the glass aroma tube sticks out of the unit and looks a bit weird to the unknowing folks. On the odor front however the Arizer is the best. The ultra-efficient heating chamber combined with the glass and managed airflow, extract almost everything out of the botanical making it virtually odor less. Since the temperature management is advanced as well, nothing will burn so the unit performs top of its category when it comes being stealthy to the nose.

Winner: Magic Flight – this is a close call. If you are looking for something small and light, go with the Launch Box. If in comparison less odor is more important to you than size, Solo is one of the best portable vaporizers on that front!

Vape SHOWDOWN

Buy Magic Flight Launch BoxThe Magic Flight and the Solo are designed for different needs. Both of these units have a large following. The Launch box is more popular among younger folks, while the Solo is highly sought after among the less price conscious and older crowd.
If your first priority is discreetness or portability, then the Magic Flight is an amazing vaporizer and will be perfect for you. You get an excellent vape for the price, but you lose on flexibility and vapor quality. The Solo, on the other hand, is one of the most popular vaporizers around for a very good reason. It manages to sacrifice almost nothing in quality and still be very portable and discreet. And for the few shortcomings there are multiple accessories to enhance the performance of the unit.
Because of the spectacular vapor quality, manufacturing quality and sheer enjoyment of using the Arizer Solo it's definitely the winner here.

Vaporizing Blends: Connoisseur Chronicle (1)

This is our first post under the Connoisseur Chronicle label. We will be talking about how you can take your vaporizing to the next level and give you tips and tricks on how to make your passion into a hobby!

Vaporizing Blends Connoisseur Chronicle

Vaporization allows you to enjoy aromatherapy plants and oils wherever you are. Some vaporizers come with a potpourri dish that lets you diffuse scents into the surrounding area (Arizer Vaporizers), while others are designed for personal use only. Aromatherapy and traditional Chinese medicine can improve your health and quality of life while also allowing you to enjoy unique flavours in conjunction with your favorite botanical (whatever that might be :-) ).

Many cigarette producers tried to associate themselves with these health promoting botanicals by adding chemicals that mimic the flavor, but with a vaporizer you have the option of not only enjoying the effect of the essential oils but also the taste. Many people use candles, air freshener sprays and incense for aromatherapy, but vaporization eliminates the heavy smoke scent. You can also experience the pure natural fragrance without traditional by-products used to extract these oils (alcohol, animal fats, petrochemicals, etc…). Vaporization is the best way to experience the positive effects of some of the following botanicals, without having to resort to non-natural methods.

Vaporizing Lavender

Lavandula is an extremely popular aromatherapy scent because of its use for combating anxiety and tension. It also has a great floral scent. The flowers have been used for relaxation and to cure insomnia for millennia. It can help with mild asthma, headaches, and cold symptoms. We recommend you vaporize lavender at 130°C. (Wikipedia link)

Vaporizing Chamomile

Chamomile is primarily consumed orally as the soothing effects are very well known for the digestive system. The vapor of boiled Chamomile however has been used for treat common flue for thousands of years.  Generally this botanical can be effective as a sleep aid, relaxant or for the boosting immune system as a result of its antibacterial properties.

Vaporizing Mint

Mentha work to invigorate and energize you at the end of a long day. The scent is uplifting and stress relieving, and can improve mental function. They also soothe all kinds of nausea and indigestion. Spearmint is a little bit stronger than peppermint, but both work very well. Mints should be vaporized between 154 - 166°C. (Wikipedia link)

Vaporizing Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is commonly used to clear your entire respiratory system with its fresh, stimulating scent. This can help with hay fever, allergies, and cold symptoms such as congestion and sore throats. It has also been used as an antibacterial agent. Best vaporization temperature for Eucalyptus is around 130 °C (Livestrong link)
Vaporizing Eucalyptus

Vaporizing Lemon Balm

Melissa Officinalis is mostly applied as a calming botanical that helps reduce stress, increase appetite, promote sleep and ease pain. This botanical can be vaporized at 145°C. It is common to add mix it with other botanicals to create a blend that not only shines in flavor but also in soothing effect. (University of Mariland link)

Vaporizing Ginger

Buy VaporizerGinger is invigorating and stimulating, and can give you the energy you need for both physical and mental effort. It also soothes nausea and works really well against motion sickness on long trips. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine to help with cold and flu symptoms. Ginger should be vaporized at 175 - 200°C. (Wikipedia link)

Vaporizing Rosemary

Rosemary improves memory function and recall during work. It's invigorating and can treat both mental and physical exhaustion. It's mostly used as a spice, so it's well known and easy to find. Artisan chefs have used balloons full of rosemary vapor at restaurant meals to complement delicate flavours. [Storz & Bickel GmbH]

This is just a start to give you idea of what to vaporize. Think about your favourite scented candles and oils for other ideas. You can find lots of great botanicals at local health food and aromatherapy stores, or ask an aromatherapy specialist. Remember that we are not medical professionals and can't know what's best for your individual situation. All the information above has been cross checked across many online sources. Feel free to follow the links at the end of every paragraph for more detail.

Flashvape Vaporizer Review

The Flashvape is a brand new Canadian Portable Vaporizer that retails at $129. This unit was officially released in November 2012, but didn’t catch the eye of the wider market until 2013. It is getting a lot of press as it is really fast and easy to use. We always like to support quality vaporizer brands, especially if they are made right here in Canada. This unit demands special respect since it is the first high quality portable that is made in British Columbia, which is a recognized cultural hotspot for vaporizer and botanical lovers in the world! We are happy to announce that this quality Canadian vaporizer passed all our testing and we welcome Flashvape to our Portable Vaporizer product line.

Flashvape Vaporizer

Flashvape Vaporizer Review

How it Works

The Flashvape has an extremely simple mechanism. There's a main power button at the bottom. When you press the button it will enable the heat button in the center of the unit. When the button is pressed down, the heating chamber heats up. It is exactly the same mechanism that Launch Boxs use (read Launch Box Review). The heat kicks in very quickly.
To use this vaporizer, you just load your botanical in the large heating chamber at the top. Grind your botanical, preferably using a ZEUS Grinder. Cover the complete surface area of the heating chamber with botanical but don’t fill it higher than 0.5 centimeters. The best method to use the Flashvape, is to hold the button for about 7 seconds. After you have held it for the first 1-2 seconds, you start drawing. When you release the button on the 7th second, you continue the draw. Make sure that your draw is as SLOW as possible. You will get much better vapor with this type of vaporizer if you draw slower. If you draw fast enough you won’t even get any vapor at all, so this point is very important.

Cleaning the Flashvape Vaporizer

One distinct advantage of this unit is the possibility to clean it with rubbing alcohol. All other units in this price category gather odor uite fast and since they use materials like plastic or wood, cannot be cleaned with cleaning solutions. We always recommend our organic cleaning solution, but in order to illustrate how robust this unit is, we will show that it can even be cleaned with rubbing alcohol!
Flashvape Vaporizer Cleaning

Temperature Settings

The Flashvape only has one setting, which isn't too unusual for this style of portable. All the temperature control is based on how long you hold down the button. This puts you completely in charge of the temperature settings once you get the hang of it, but it isn't a very sophisticated mechanism. Among low cost vaporizer this mechanism is the most common. While with other units like the Magic Flight launch Box you have to push the battery, the Flashvape actually has a button with this feature. In this category, the Flashvape does not get a good rating as the manufacturers have decided to forfeit this functionality for a lower price point for the customer, just like the makers of the manufacturers of the MFLB. All in all however the unit has the best temperature control in its price category.

Vapor Quality

Flashvape Vaporizer Heating Chamber
Flashvape after Cleaning
Despite the simple mechanism, the vapor quality from the Flashvape Vaporizer is better than you'd think. The heating chamber is completely separate from the rest of the unit and the airflow comes in from outside, so you get the cleanest, purest vapor from your botanicals. In most other ways this unit works like a Magic Flight Launch Box, but it manages to get better vapor quality. This is primarily a result of the flat and larger vaporization surface in the heating chamber. The materials in the way of the heating and vapor are ceramic, glass and surgical grade stainless steel. Compared to other units in this price class like the palm vaporizer, which has plastic and acryl in the heating chamber, the Flashvape has a much better setup for a comparable price.

Manufacturing Quality

The Flashvape has spectacular manufacturing quality. The casing is made of aluminum alloy, and feels amazingly solid. Just touch it and you'll be sure nothing's going to happen to it. The heating chamber is completely made of high quality ceramic, and the whole thing is precision machined. The look is pretty cool, and definitely sleek. It looks like a light saber from the star wars movies! Flashvape gives their unit a 2 year warranty and due to the simple and robust manufacturing we don’t see a risk of a high manufacturing defect rate, not only because it is made in Canada but also because it doesn’t have complex functionality like the PAX Vaporizer that would make it prone to defects.
Buy Vaporizer

Portability

The Flashvape will fit pretty well in a backpack or large purse, and it's easy to hold. On the other hand, it's larger and heavier than most portables. This is mostly a sign of how durable it is, but it's not the most convenient to carry around. It's too large to put in a pocket, and way heavier than you'll want to just carry around with you all the time. That being said it is definitely possible to take it with on the go, especially since the large battery holds much more power than that of other vaporizer in this category (magic flight, palm-not a recommended unit). In general this category is something the makers had to make sacrifices on for the sake of vapor quality and better end price for the customer.
Flashvape Vaporizer

Discreetness

In terms of odor, this unit performs very good. Since the heating chamber holds the botanical enclosed in a ceramic chamber the minimal odor that it generates stay relatively contained. As the name indicates, this Portable Vaporizer looks like a flashlight. The makers were probably referring to the speed of the unit, but in some interesting coincidental way it really looks like a flashlight. If discreetness is important to you, just get the black unit instead of the silver version of the Flashvape.

Overall Experience

The Flashvape has awesome manufacturing quality, and the flaws it does have are mostly the side effects of the premium materials that are used in combination with the exceptionally low price. It has a unique look and feel, and a simple heating system. We find that units with simpler heating mechanisms tend to have very few warranty issues. This unit is a great choice for people that are looking for a low cost portable vaporizer, and prefer vapor and manufacturing quality over portability. If you find yourself more interested in portability, the Magic Flight Launch Box might be a better choice.

Balloon vs Whip Style Vaporizer

There are two main ways of using stationary vaporizers, balloons and whips. The most basic stationaries just have the whip attachment. The Volcano can only be used with balloons, because of its premium convection heating system. And then there are the more flexible vaporizers, like the Extreme Q, which can be used with both. Here's a rundown of the differences between Balloon vs Whip Style Vaporizer and why you might prefer one type of vaporization over another.
Balloon vs Whip Style Vaporizer

Whip Style Vaporizer

Aromed Whip Style Vaporizer
Whip is the technical term for the medical grade tubing used to connect the mouthpiece to your vaporizer. Using a whip, you need to be right next to your vaporizer, so you can reach the mouthpiece. You control your intake of vapor by taking draws. With some vaporizers, this can make a difference in the vapor. The AroMed Vaporizer heats the botanical with light, and the heat is increased or decreased depending on the strength of your draws and the intensity of the light.

With a whip style vaporizer you only have vapor when you want it. Your draws pull vapor out of the filling chamber, and otherwise you aren't using your botanical. If you turn off your vaporizer and come back later, your botanicals can still be used and there will be little difference in vapor quality until they run out of essential oils.

You need to stay right next to your vaporizer for this to work, though. You can't move away from the room where it's plugged in, and it can only stretch to the number of people who can fit next to it. You can use a whip vaporizer in groups by passing the whip around, but you all have to be sitting close to the unit for that to work.

Vaporizer

Balloon Style Vaporizer

Volcano Balloon Style VaporizerWith some vaporizers, you can attach balloons or bags to the heating chamber and the vaporizer will fill them using a built-in fan. After that, you can detach the balloon and carry it around with you. You don't have to stay near your vaporizer, and if you're in a group you can pass the vapor balloon around the room. This is the more portable option, since you don't have to be right next to your vaporizer, and it's definitely the best option for parties.

If you're on your own, though, it might be a bit hard to use the entire vapor in one balloon. Storz and Bickel, the makers of the Volcano [link], say never to store vapor in balloons for more than an hour. The vapor gets stale very quickly, and then starts condensing on the sides of the balloon. You should use your entire vapor within 15 minutes. Some vaporizers, like the Volcano, have adjustable balloon sizes, so this becomes less of a problem and alternatively you can only fill the portion of the balloon with vapor that you intend on using.

Conclusion

Extreme Q Balloon - Whip & Style Vaporizer
So the major difference between balloon style and whip style vaporizing is convenience, since balloons are much more convenient to use and share. Balloons do tend to have slightly better vapor as well since the vapor has some time to cool down to room temperature. In contrast the Whip is more efficient since there is less surface area inside the tube (as compared to inside the inflated balloon) for the vapor to settle on and get wasted. To sum up, if you're really not sure which method you'd prefer, or you want both, you can always go with the Extreme Q (on the right) ! It's got both options and amazing vapor quality.

Thank you for reading today's blog about the difference of Balloon vs Whip Style Vaporizer. Hope you find the post useful and as always, feel free to leave your comments in the section below.

Vaporfection viVape Vaporizer Review

The viVape by Vaporfection is a Stationary Vaporizer that has been around for a little over a year. We have been asked to do a review on it to outline why it is that we do not carry the product. It is well known that we only approve units for our store that do perform well at the price point they are being sold at. Let’s review this Chinese made vape and give some more insight on why the viVape did not make it into our store.

The viVape Vaporizer that can be used with balloons or a whip and is priced at 450$. It has a great appearance on pictures. It's pretty simple in design and easy to use. It's controlled by a touch screen without any buttons or dials.

Vaporfection viVape Vaporizer

Vaporfection viVape Vaporizer Review

Vapor Quality

The Vapor tastes good and has good flavor too. The advantage with balloon vaporizers is that the vapor is extracted into the balloon and has therefore time to cool down to room temperature. This will make the vapor more flavorful and easier to consume. However, the heating chamber isn't optimally designed to make full use of your botanical. Since the heating chamber is vertical, you botanical will fall to the bottom and most of the air will pass over the botanical, rather than going through it.
Vaporfection viVape Vaporizer Heating Chamber
Vertical Heating Chamber Issue
This is one of the reasons why the Vaporfection does not give as dense of vapor as balloon vaporizer like the Arizer Extreme Q (which is half the price, performs better and is assembled in Canada). Every major brand like the Volcano or the Extreme Q have horizontal heating chambers and a fan switch, so it makes us wonder why the viVape gave up these important factors that are critical in vapor perfection.

Extreme Q Vaporizer Horizontal Heating Chamber
Extreme Q Vaporizer Horizontal Heating Chamber
This unit is somewhat annoying if you intend on using it with the whip only, since there is a constant stream of vapor shooting out of it. The fan can’t be shut off (no idea why they did that), so it will make constant noise and waste your vapor if you don’t take your wand off the unit every time after you take a draw. One batch will give approximately 25 draws so you will be doing that VERY often. Overall the vapor quality on the Vaporfection is good, but the fact that the fan is running and the vertical heating chamber make it relatively inconvenient to use.
Vaporizer

Manufacturing Quality

The viVape has lots of new ideas like a touch screen, but the implementation is kind of limited. The touch screen is not very responsive, which means it can give the wrong responses when you try to press on it. The machine itself is very delicate - if you blow material back into the unit through the whip it could be permanently damaged. Most vaporizers at this price level should be fine with something like that.
The fan is continuously in operation regardless of the settings. This means that there's always background noise. Even worse, some of your vapor can be wasted because the fan's still going. It has a cool down mode that engages automatically when you shut it off. This sounds much better than what it actually is. So this is what happens. When the unit is on you will constantly hear the fan, once you turn the unit off it will be even louder.

When it comes to the quality of the components, we were not impressed. Have a look at the picture to the right and you can see that the plastic casing of the unit has marks of where the screws are inside the unit.
Vaporfection viVape Vaporizer Manufacturing Quality
The valve system is exceptionally cheap. It looks like the company buys their components from the dollar store. Have a look at the type of accessories you get with this 450$ unit. Keep in mind that this unit falls in the price class comparable to the classic volcano and should be compared to that. The worst thing that we found is the PVC stirring tool. This tool will touch the heating chamber where the botanical is in. This is not safe and this factor by itself is enough to disqualify the unit completely.
Vaporfection viVape Vaporizer Accessories
Here is just a quick look at the packaging of a 89$ E.Z. Vape, the 450$ viVape and the 530$ Classic Volcano.  One would think that the volcano and viVape would look similar, but that is not the case.

Temperature Flexibility

You adjust the temperature on the viVape by pressing the symbols on the touch screen. The heating chamber glows blue when it's reached the right temperature, and it has a sensor which automatically adjusts the temperature as you draw. The temperature flexibility of this unit is very good.

Speed

The viVape heats up pretty quickly, in two minutes. If you're just using the whip, you can plug in your heating chamber and start then. However, the balloons can take up to two and a half minutes to fill. The Volcano, by contrast, fills balloons in thirty seconds. The balloon is farther away from the unit since it has to be fastened to the end of the whip, which is inconvenient. This all made it take much longer than we expected and the type of components used to do this is things that can be found at a hardware store for pennies.

Reach

Because this unit can be used with either balloons or a whip, it has great reach. The balloons make this unit great for parties. However, if you're passing the whip around you need to be quick to avoid wasting vapor, since the fan keeps running the whole time.

Vaporizer

Overall Experience

Overall, this unit was pretty disappointing. The vapor quality is good, but the manufacturing is gimmicky and the touch screen only does 3-4 things. Because the fan is always running, there's constant noise from operation and vapor is always shooting out - wasteful, and not very discreet. Vaporizers in this price range are held to higher standards, and the viVape doesn't meet them. This unit is a good buy at the $160-$180 price range, but not at $450. Consider the Extreme Q or the Aromed Vaporizer instead if you are looking to get a bang for your buck and spend less money at the same time.

Thank you for taking the time to read today's Vaporfection viVape Vaporizer review. Feel free to leave your comments of questions below.
